During this year I have attended a lot of meetings about technology. I have heard from some of the gurus of tech about the digital natives and ain't it wonderful about how much they multitask and use all the latest tech tools. Frankly, I'm sort of tired of listening to the same song and dance about the tech use. I want to talk about the content that's being delivered by all of these gizmos.

Cell phones. Never has so much been said by so many about so little. The constant chattering that the cell phone has created has been a boon to the phone companies, but a curse to education. There are so many things one of those devices can do, but their use for trivial things and taking pictures of everything, and nothing, has cancelled out their positive features. There is a saying about a monkey with a computer is still a monkey, and a kid with a cell phone is still a kid. What do you think they're going to use it for. Solving physics problems, of course.

Gaming has affected neurology. Kids nervous systems become wired to the WII and they can interact almost at the level of the CPU. That must have some value, I suppose, though the gurus simply tell you that this has happened, smile a big smile as though somehow that's meaningful and move on without explanation. Another "Cool," or "WOW" moment, which happens a lot when tech and kids are mentioned in the same breath.

We are told that because they are using these tools for their social and entertainment needs, that we should use them for instruction because the kids expect their toys to be part of their day, all day. No one asks why, or is it a good idea, just that it should be done. Well, I question the wisdom in those statements.

The research shows in another line that inundates tech conversation. We are currently micromanaging everything in sight. Because the computer has let us handle data much better than we used to, it is supposed we should have "data driven reasons" for doing everything. And everything is what we are measuring. Everything in your daily world that you just used to enjoy has now been investigated and you find out that just about everything you do has hidden consequences. I don't know about you, but that's not news to me. The first thing I think I can count on is eventually being dead. Extending my life is a pleasant pass time, but not to the extent that I am worried that everything I do is hazardous and I should consider all of these things before I make a decision. Let's just say that we are awash in data and much of it is irrelevant because it is a feature of many variables that can't be controlled. You either live your life, or intend to live it once you figure out all the things you're supposed to do to make it.....? Yeah, make it what; enjoyable.

Let's Try Once a Week

I originally tried to keep this Log on a daily basis. That obviously hasn't worked, so let's try once a week.
This week, in the morning, has been a busy one with computer installations and trainings on the fly. I have started my days at CSD fixing minor problems and searching for ports for Mr. Mahoney's room. I had to make a patch cord for a Special Ed. office. Checked with Morgan about shared calendar. Working with Tom Schappert to get "To Kill a Mockingbird" edited.
Hurlock Elementary and the new carts. Teachers have had the carts configured by Rob. Good job. I have loaded Interwrite Sample Lessons on their computers in anticipation of training. I will work with the whole 4th and 5th grade after school when convenient to them. Worked with John Tomey on Wednesday. Reconfigured his camera and started Interwrite training. I will show him Turning Point soon.
NDH has been my focus in the afternoon. I have worked with Math teachers, installing software, replacing computers and training on the use of the document camera, Interwrite pad and Turning Point.

Been Gone too long. I've just not been motivated to write my daily doings for quite awhile as the blog entries denote. It isn't because there has been little to do. As a matter of fact it has been just the opposite. Many meetings and daily interaction have been the watch words.

There is an issue at the moment that I want to address. The assessing of technology literacy in our 8th graders. The Feds are requiring a head count of those students that meet the Technology Literacy by Grade 8 Standards. MSDE has been meeting, through the Consortium, to try and determine the best way to do the measurement. We have come to a conclusion on the process and are awaiting outcome based on the States blessing.

Since this is a country-wide issue, I thought some references on the subject would be appropriate. Below are some links to articles that may be of interest to you on the subject.

Here I am about a month-and-a-half later. The pace has been fast and furious.

-The Grade Book issue on PowerTeacher was resolved this morning. The IT folks brought a couple of CISCO engineers in and they reprogrammed the counties electronic switches, rerouting traffic. The grade books seem to be working well. Yes!!!!!

-The teachers with projectors and document cameras have been my main focus. Julie and I have been helping them get up and running with their hardware and helping them understand the software that accompanies some of the peripherals. We are emphasizing the content first, technology second. The job I was hired to do is morphing into reality as the equipment to do it begins to materialize in the system. The past two years were spent talking about what they could do and vaporware.

-I'm still doing a lot of tech work on computers, but the contacts with teachers is allowing me to encourage them to use technology where appropriate. I still am having problems getting them to plan with me to see how the technology can be used to enhance what they are attempting to teach. I'll get it done, in time.

-Went to a STEM meeting this morning. Things are looking up for our students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

-This afternoon the Virtual Chemistry Labs will begin their journey to the high school's servers. They will be a big help to the teachers.

It's schizophrenic....

Last week was a study in contrasts. At CSD everything was in its usual chaotic mode. The technology isn't working well in the building. The new grade books are not operating properly and we still don't know why. The past few days were very frustrating.

On the other hand, I went to North Dorchester and things were totally different. There are loose ends to tie up there, but certainly nothing to compare to CSD. We'll see what this week brings.

There is new equipment (projectors and document cameras) in the system this year and I'm looking forward to helping teachers integrate them into instruction. I want to get away from maintenance as soon as I can.

The State is rolling out a new online Biology course and I'll be at a preview tomorrow.

Year Three Begins...and just where have you been?

What can I say? The last post was in May and here I show up at the end of August. The truth is that I didn't have a lot to say.

The school year ended well and I just let the blog slide. The Summer was great and now we're back at it.

I must admit that for the past two years I have enjoyed my job. The new challenges have been fulfilling. Truth is that for the past two years I have felt as though I should be doing something else. The decompression from forty years in the classroom has finally ended. This year I feel that I am doing what I should be doing. I am finally in my element and content.

That being said....let's pick up the thread in our erratic conversation. School started on Tuesday, August 25th. Teachers were called to duty on Thursday, August 20th, with the rookie teachers starting on the 17th. I did a training with Julie on Wednesday the 19th. It went well and things were off and running.

A Monday in May

This morning I have located the Vernier software for operating the labs that we'll be running during the Tech Academy in June. I've put a link on the Interactive Training Lab site.
The Kurzweil software is loaded on the three laptops and the software has been activated over the phone. They are ready for the HSA next week.
Logger Pro 3.4.6 is on my laptop with the Lab Pro connected getting ready to do labs that will be used in the Tech Academy training.
Jim Heister is going to be involved in the Tech Academy. We talked today and I showed him the Utility Blog.
E-mails have been sent to SPED teachers about the Tech Academy and their use of calculators.
Fixed a printer problem in the math department.
Got an SOS on a laptop gone down.
Working on the Vision statement for the STEM Grant.

Jim Heister did an excellent job demonstrating the use of the TI calculators. Kudos to Jim.
The weeks since I have returned from MICCA have been extremely busy.Each day brings the usual bevy of problems at the schools.
-Computers that are shutting down.
-I can't access x, or Y or Z.
-The VCR won't play.
-I can't get on the Internet.
-I need a new Jeopardy template where can I get one?
-A lamp has blown in my projector. What do I do?
-We must do something about Internet safety.
-There are grants that need getting.
-How do I put audio in my PowerPoint?
-Can you come install something on my computer?
-I need to have a computer set up in my room.
-Can you arrange a training for .....?
-There will be a technology workshop this summer for Math/Science teachers. What should we do?
-How do you set up a blog?
-Can you put a scanner on my computer?
-We got all of this software with our new textbooks. How does it work?
-Can I get a video projector for a presentation? How does it work.
-I can't access my grade book.
-The Internet is down. Do you know what's wrong?
-and on and on.....

Certainly, this is not a boring job. There are always new things popping up that can challenge one on any given day. I enjoy the hub-bub.
As the school year comes to a thundering close, the problems become more numerous. Grades are due, testing is eminent and everyone is tired.
I am trying each day to complete tasks that need doing for future events. A Vision statement needs to be written for the completion of a grant application. Ongoing plans for a workshop in the summer. Creating a presentation for the Rotary Club at the end of May. E-mails that need to be sent to departments to query them about their current and future needs.
I'm off to see the Wizard...

I'm here in Baltimore at the MICCA conference. It is day two of the festivities. Yesterday I attended the Media 8 Boot Camp. Intense training on Flash 8 and Dreamweaver 8. Richard Jolles was hard-nosed and covered a long list of "do this" things. He gave us a detailed list of instructions that covers what he said at warp speed. There was much to learn and more to do during those dark nights of the soul.

Day 2 brought two presentations on great data repository websites.

Tech Teach - a tremendous site loaded with great resources for the connected teacher.

Curriculum Based Technology Integration Activities - The Curriculum-Based Technology Integration Activities database has been developed to provide teachers with "Best Practices" in technology integration to support teaching and learning.

After lunch, Julie and I attended a workshop on making interactive PowerPoint presentations. We learned how to build and use VBA (Visual Basic scripts for Applications) scripts in PowerPoint. Very useful and well done. Much here to take to our teachers.

Tomorrow I will learn more about Audacity and producing files for embedding in PowerPoint and on websites.

Jim Heister has a PD Thursday afternoon at NDH. He will be training some of his math contemporaries on downloading nad using small scripts on the TIs. I'm going to try and make it in the afternoon. We'll see.

The past couple of weeks have been a crush. Work at CSD and NDH. Adam Tolley has been adding to his instructional prowess with highlighting tools and online quiz making. Students are coming with floppy disks with Works documents, or corruption. Getting them to buy and use thumb drives is the next challenge. We need to sell them in the Media Center.

It's the day before the Spring Break

Last week and this week have been extremely productive and busy.

-On the March 27th we attended the e-Communities Summit at Loyola College Columbia. Picked up quite a bit on LMS.
-The 28th found me at NDH working with Rachel Roberts and Sheri Hubbard. Rachel needed two things. Get her teacher computer working with her Smart TV and install Equation Editing software. Mission accomplished. Hopefully the equipment will get used.
Sheri Hubbard wants to relocate a portion of her graduate reading program to an online venue. She wants to use D2L for about 20% of her program. Once she determines what portion of her instruction she wants reformated, Julie and I will go to work helping Sheri accomplish her goals.
-The 29th was devoted to teachers at CSD beginning with Ashley Robinson. Now that the science department all have access to digital projectors and laptops, instruction can begin to accelerate.
PowerPoint has been the vehicle of choice for teachers beginning to use technology instruction. The application has its use throughout the curriculum and should be the most fundamental piece of instructional software used by an instructor. However, real use of technology must consider other forms of instruction that are more interactive.
Instructors should present and organized arrangement of teacher materials and processes that are universally available to all. Presenting the following in a web format should be the most fundamental online use of technology for all instructors:

a. syllabus
b. calendar of test dates and other pertinent events
c. lesson outline
(1). topic
(2). objectives
(3). homework
(4). integrated technology-instructional links

As I work with teachers the hope is to elevate their instruction by getting them organized and teaching by objective. The use of integrated technology such as E-beam and Turning Point will be a plus once the teachers have established an online base of operations.

-Friday was spent working in the media lab to organize materials that will be used for classroom instruction on the web.

-Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday were spent with teachers.
Met with Adam Tolley and his student teacher Tiffany Brittingham. Showed Tiffany how to use Audacity to record online audio. Worked on blog and links to websites

This morning was a search for free sheet music with a student and a discussion with Ashley Robinson. I'll will go into Ashley's room tomorrow and begin disassembling the teaching station that I used to use. This should be the beginning of technology infusion.

A couple of grade book issues settled. Then off to the Board to work on a laptop that needed setting up. Put on apps and transfered files. Brought it back to Jevon at CSD to put on the domain. I'll return it tomorrow.

Got the new locks for the laptop cart. Had a problem putting them on and I have passed the problem off to Gordon. He can fix anything.

Tomorrow Ashley, Sandy Hill and then meet with Jim Ryan during 4th period.

Two Busy Days

Monday began with blogging. Kristina McDowell wanted to use a blog to post information about her music and chorus classes. She is now online. You can find her here: The Music Box.

During the 4th period I worked with Lisa Gowe on her Power Point skills. She is creating a presentation on The Color Purple for her English class.

Tuesday was spent at NDH. I met with Jim Heister about blogging. You can find Jim's site at: Heister's Blogs.

During the afternoon I met with Jamie Culver. She was interested in using United Streaming and a video projector. I took a laptop, wireless router and projector with me. Ms. Culver is going to use the laptop cart and projectot for her class instruction. She also has a blog. You can find her at: Culver Algebra 1.

Today, two appointments were scheduled, but both canceled and re-scheduled. I have been in my Media Lab. Scanning pages into text files for one teacher,attempting to convert a video into a DVD, removing two VCRs that have given up the ghost, generating MP3 files and communicating with teachers who need help with instruction. All-in-all a fruitful day.

It's Almost Spring!

You know, when I started the Floating Opera my intention was to post on a daily basis. Somehow the best layed plans of mice and men......

Since we last talked, over two months ago, much has happened. I have continued picking up tickets for Special Education. Teachers have become more interested in using their computers and technology. My dance card has been full.

Currently, I am working with teachers who want to Blog. More of the instructors are seeing the value of being online. The classroom instruction piece is still a function of equipment. Each classroom should have at least a video projector to be considered a "smart classroom." It is pointless for me to go into a classroom to assist a teacher who has only a desktop computer and little else.

We had a workshop for technology a couple of weeks ago that went well. Teachers have signed up for appointments with me and I am helping them in any way that I can.

I am e-mailing individuals to give them information on available sites in their content areas and to encourage them to be more creative with their instruction. Appointments are being made and things are looking up.

Julie and I have upcoming workshops and demonstrations. The e-Communites, MICCA and our presentation before the administrative council. Check out the Calendar link.

It's Next Year Already!

Ate the turkey, sang the Christmas carols and drank the champagne. 2007 is upon us and I've hit the ground running.
We're short handed with our technology personnel, so everyone is working like one-arm paperhangers. I've been doing anything, and eveything, that's necessary to keep the teachers operational.
Thank heavens that Linda and Rich can keep ND afloat because my other charges have been a full time job. I think I've caught up the tech dept. on their tickets. The jobs were diverse and that's OK.
I'm currently involved with the Ed Options Credit Recovery Program. Generating lessons for Tech Ed and Horticulture. Converting video tapes into MPEG files. Editing sound bites and running the web site. Will be working with Ms. Kilmon second semester on the AP Biology course.
Seems I'm about to get into the Technology Standards for Secondary Schools.
Still no computers at the GSA. Hard to believe! We're out of everything as far as replacement equipment. I hope something pops here soon.

It's Almost Thanksgiving!

Much has happened since I last addressed you. Probably the most surprising occurrence was being told that the GSA warehouse (our source for used computers) was empty. I'm waiting to hear from them concerning any new arrivals.
I'm still working on tickets for the Special Ed Department.
-Installed Kurzweil at several locations.
-Set up computer at Sandy Hill.
-Set up a new computer at Hurlock Elementary.
-Set up a laptop for student use.
-I have five computers to set up at North Dorchester High.

Along the way working the Special Ed, I have run across other jobs that need doing and have started on them.
-Finished setting up computers at Sandy Hill Elementary.
-Have five computers to set up for the Media Center at Choptank Elementary

Besides my tech fixes, I have been having success with helping teachers with their instruction. My greatest success has been with David Lamparter. He has taken off at a hundred miles an hour. He has a digital projector, new laptop, wireless mouse, a blog and tons of ideas. The best part is how it has excited him and he is transmitting that enthusiasm in his teaching. He's going to be a superstar.
I'm still connecting computers to TVs. Not as many as last year, as Mr. Wood is spending more on AV equipment. Specifically digital projectors and laptops.
The laptops that were purchased to operate the Plato system are being used by many other teachers. They are using room E-134 as an instructional area and things are going great.
I did a Power Point thing for teachers on Nov. 7th PD (Election Day) using the laptops. It was very successful because it encouraged some of the teachers to deepen their use of Power Point. I also talked about the use of Audacity to create MP3 files for insertion into presentations.
Rich Petrowski is fired-up to use audacity and wire his room for sound and video. He's excited and I'm looking forward to working with him.
More and more teachers are using technology in their instruction and the pressure is building to increase the tech budget to get the equipment needed to do the job. Each teacher should have a digital projector as a minimum. That gets them in the ball game and we can rocket from there.
Currently I am making backups of disks and tapes for instruction. I'm going out today to Choptank to start the process of getting those five computers on the road.
It's getting close to the holidays. I'm hoping for more Fall-like temperatures. It's too warm. Yuk..

Started today with a long list of honey-dos.

- Internet down and the Guidance secretary's computer on the fritz. Looks like the board is cooked. Internet fixed, thanks to Jevon.
-I've got work to do with the Special Ed computers that are running the Kurzweil Reader. They need checking and coordinating.
-Software needs to be loaded on some. Office, Deep Freeze etc.
-Some new equipment needs installing in teacher's rooms.
-I am converting some laser disk presentations over to Quick Time for use in the Science and Ethics program.
-Need to hook up a Smart TV tomorrow.
-Had a printer problem woth a new math program. Fixed it with an Acrobat Reader 7.0 install.
-Need to visit VoTech about their computers using Kurzweil.
-Presentation for Ms. Howell on the Hound and Stapleton.

Why the long delay.....?

Here we are in October and I'm just now getting around to making an entry. What have I been doing?

Well, here's my story. Last year, when I was newly minted, the job was a work in progress. This year there has been a solidifying of components to make the task at hand palpable. Which means I am entrenched each day in a collage of activities.

When we returned from the Summer there were all sorts of things that needed fixing. New laptop carts. Plato Learning System was integrated into the reading program. Gradebook upgrades caused all sorts of problems for instructors. New computers had to be set up. Software needed loading. Training for teachers in everything from the Smart Room to laptop etiquette. Working between CSD, NDH and Votech. Julie and I have also divided up the elementary schools, so I try to get there when I can. It has been a busy time and has accounted for my not entering my daily activities. I am still dealing with more hardware problems than I care to, but it goes with the territory.

I want to report things more regularly; starting now.

The very noticable change this year has been the number of teachers using technology. We have each classroom with at least a computer and TV connection. Many more digital projectors are available now as well as portable laptops with a wireless router. Teachers are using United Streaming more than last year for PowerPoint presentations.

I have taught several teachers how to blog. I'm doing a lot of analog to digital conversion of video and audio tapes. Teachers are beginning to see the advantage of having a video in MPEG format.

Kurzweil is being utilized more than last year. This is due to more IEPs that require students have audio assistance for reading and tests. The Special Ed Departmets are using scanners to get text files and the company that markets the Kurzweil software has quite a list of texts that have been scanned.

All-in-all it has been busy. We are approaching the end of the first term and things are going well. We are planning a trip to the GSA warehouse to pick up computers that will be used in our schools. We will house them here at CSD and students will be used to get the computers ready. There is plenty to do and each day is full.

Yesterday and today were spent mainly tying up loose ends.

-Spent first period with Ashley Phillips showing her the technology in the biology lab into which she has just moved.
-Lots of Power Grade issues. All resolved
-Reimaged one machine, new monitor and printer
-Helped Ron Declement
-Votech Power Grade with Charlene and loaded some software for Rex
-Laptop for Patsy Lamparter

9th graders came today and all went smoothly. I think we're basically ready for the onslaught. There will be some tech problems tomorrow, but the dust is beginning to settle.

Well, it's back to the grind. We started things up last Thursday the 17th of August. Meetings during the day, lots of things done and pending.
-Greetings to the faculty at North Dorchester.
-Steve Willey wants to blog.
-Ron Declement needs help.
-John Wood wants much interaction with faculty.
-Met with Votech faculty Friday the 18th.
-Spent the morning getting Mr. Wood ready for an online presentation on Monday. Used the new wireless router and laptop.
-Got wireless cart ready to go. Developed a series of webpages to give faculty access to Security and Troubleshooting information about the new wireless laptop cart. You can find the wepage that takes you to all the info by clicking HERE
-I have three presentations on Monday the 21st to the CSD faculty on the Smart Room, Wireless Cart and Its Use and the Media Lab.
-In between I need to get Terry Nuwer's computer up and running.
-I also need to build a webpage containing the details of the Campus Technology 2006 Conference in Boston this summer. Great conference. Much to relate.

Oh, where have you been Billie boy, Billie boy...

Well, it's been a long time between drinks!
Interestingly enough, I had originally started this blog to document my daily, weekly and now monthly goings-on. At first, because the job was a work in progress, the blog helped me to organize the tasks that would make up my daily schedule. Things have evolved since my last login, to say the least!
Here are just some of the things that have transpired since last we communicated:

North Dorchester High

-Just two days ago I installed the last four teacher computers. All of the teachers at ND are now on good machines running XP. Many of the replacement computers were from the GSA warehouse and are meeting our needs.

-Rich's kids have been doing good work to keep the teachers classroom computers running. Three of his kids have been hired for the Summer to work in the schools.

-The classroom cluster project fizzled due to lack of money. The GSA computers have mainly been used to upgrade teacher computers. Also, there has been a question concerning bandwith. We are, however, putting the teacher's old computer back into their classrooms to be used for differentiated instruction and research.

-The wireless cart with laptops is getting its share of use. Another cart is in the offing for next year.

-I have installed the Acellus program on a couple of computers at ND and I am head troubleshooter on that project.

-Doing the odd-job of fixing some problem still tops the list at the end of the day, but that may be the most rewarding part of the job. Teachers are so thankful that one feels quite the hero.

Vo-Tech

-Most of my efforts at the Vo-Tech facility have been supporting Ron Declement and his classroom. As has been mentioned earlier, Ron is using computers to teach with everyday. He is using thirteen computers of various breeds and with their help he gets a great deal out of his kids each day. He has come a long way this year and is very tech savvy. I look to him as a leader to model how to utilize technology in instruction.

-The other members of the faculty have varying degrees of needs. They all want to use more technology, but we don't have it to give them. In particular is Charlene Zinnel in Food Service. She wants a cluster in her area and will make use of it.

-Other faculty members would like to run CAD software for design and utilize professional software used by businesses.

-Carole Segar could use a cluster to run tutorials on Anatomy and Physiology for her Nursing students.

Cambridge-South Dorchester High

-I have created a media lab at CSD. The pictures that you are seeing with this entry are of the lab. It contains five computers along with a bevy of peripherals and software. Some of my teachers here at CSD have taken advantage of these resources and have created web pages, blogs and presentations. It is my intention to continue upgrading and adding to this lab so that ideas can be brought to reality.

The function of the lab is to investigate the possibilites that exist in using technology. For instance, Turning Point and an Interwrite Smart Pad were tested here and Julie Kimball has arranged training for both of these pieces of equipment. There needs to be a facility in each school that allows teachers the opportunity, with help, to try new things and see if they would enhance their instruction. This lab is a beginning.

Web Pages and Presentations

-I have been creating presentations for teachers to try and entice them to see how much more effective and interesting their instruction would be with technology added. All of the links can be found on the Integrated Technology for High School page. Below are some of the projects that have been done for teachers at CSD, NDH and Vo-tech:

English Department

-A presentation on the book Ethan Fromme. Power Point was used with audio files, video clips and hyperlinks to the internet. An online audio file of a discussion of the book .

-A presentation on the book The Bridge Over San Luis Rey with the same accoutrements as the above presentation.

-A presentation on Huckleberry Finn. It contained United Streaming clips and was linked to a blog for teacher use to communicate with students.

-The North Dorchester High English Department wanted to get a better grasp of the software that accompanied their new text series. I built a web page that contains an inventory of their software. Using a Power Point presentation that utilized the resources supplied on the CDs, I met with them and presented the lesson called A Match to the Heart. They were surprised at the power of the software and some vowed to start using it.

-A web page containing linked information on reading and the English HSA was created to aide secondary English teachers in preparing for the State Exam.

Social Studies

- Two web pages were created for teachers who both needed to post links for their history course and I obliged them. A presentaion was done on the Fertile Crescent for Jim Ryan

-Tom Cleary wanted an AP European History page.

-Bill Horsey wanted to post his AP American History links.

- Jim, Bill, Tom and Jim Evans have used United Streaming and are becoming more technology centered with their instruction

Mathematics

-A Power Point presentation on Right Triangle Trigonometry was built for Debbie Johnson. Debbie used it to demonstrate the Smart Room to the math people in the Governor's Academy. The accompanying web page has remained posted for the use of the trigonometry students.

-A page on Algebra HSA testing was configured for the Math Department.

-I am currently the administrator for the Acellus Math Programs. The teachers are just beginning to preview each tutorial to see which ones are pertinent and how to utilize them. These will be more of a factor during the next academic year.

Horticulture

-Ron Declement needed a preasentation on Plant Hormones in his Horticulture I class. I posted a page for his objectives.

Science

-I have provided the most resources in this area. My teaching site at http://www.fastol.com/~renkwitz has been in use now for some six years and has a rather large following. I have also tutored and taught in both Human Anatomy and Physiology as well as AP Biology.

I am currently working on the project to replace the computers in Sandy Hill's media center. Jenny Murphy has ordered HDs and memory for thirty of the GSA computers. Rich Phillips' kids are going to configure the machines. Hopefully, they will be put in the media center over the Summer.

There are many more things in the offing for the Summer with Julie and some personal projects. Chesapeake College has asked me to teach an Online Biology course in the Fall and I have agreed.

It has been a full year and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.

A Week of Work-Feb 13th to 17th

This week was spent getting the computers at NDH ready to be put in teacher's rooms.
-The process begins by first putting XP and Microsoft Office on each of the HP GSA computers.
-Novell Client, Messenger, Groupwise, plugins Flash, Direct X, Shockwave and Authorware.
-NOD 32 virus hunter is installed.
-The teacher's computer is put on file sharing and the IP address for that machine is used to access their files and the pertinent ones are moved.
-The Gradebook application is loaded on and the app is poiinted at the S drive to access the teachers gradebook files.
-PowerSchool is put on the desktop.
The computer is taken to the teacher's room and connected to the old monitor and cords. One last check is done with the teacher to make sure that all is well with their new machine.

The teacher's old machine will hopefully beused for clustering.

At CSD teachers are using the Distance Learning Room, rechristened the Smart Room, almost each period. This is a real breakthrough! They are seeing the real power of technology in instruction. The problem is that they all should have a video projector in their rooms.

As sidelights I have installed a sound card for Special Ed and started two new Blogs. My days are extremely busy. I am a happy camper.

Wednesday, Feb. 8th

Started at CSD to get some paperwork completed. Went to NDH at aroumnd 10 a.m.. Replaced two computers with the new HPs in Ms. Thompson and Ms. Cohoon's rooms.
- Rich's kids have put XP and Microsoft Office on them already, but each machine takes about 30 minutes to configure in the media center.
-The big issue is Power Grade. Getting the gradebook transferred from the old computer to the new one.
-We have to log them into Novell and get Groupwise configured.
-Then there's the drivers for the printers or whatever peripherals.
Though there appears to be some "need for speed" at ND, this process will go as fast as it needs to. We have to consider the consequences of lost data or, God forbid, a grade file.

Going back tomorrow for more installations. It appears that there are about 20 computers to replace. Two down and eightteen to go.

Feb 6th & 7th

Monday morning took me to the Board where I handed in my mileage form and met with Trish Vickers and Julie.

At CSD I worked on the protocols for the flipping of teacher computers at NDH. I've created CDs with Novell/Groupwise/Plugin Installers/Flash drive drivers on them. Jevon will be joining Linda Blackmon and me to begin the process on Tuesday.

Monday also found Bill Horsey working on his web page here in the media lab. He is doing a great job. This little lab here at CSD has become a real asset to the teachers. They are using it, with my direction to get themselves onto the Internet.

Tuesday has started at CSD with e-mails and phone calls. Going to meet with Linda and Jevon at 10 a.m. at NDH to get logistically oriented on the teacher machines and then we'll begin our work.

I learned how to share files and move data between machines using IPs. Jevon was a big help. We have two of the new machines ready to replace the old ones. That's on tomorrow's bill of fare.

Jan 25th to Feb 2nd

I've been to NDH to see how things are going there. Rich and his kids are getting the HPs ready for teacher computers. I have to load Messenger, Groupwise and Novell on the machines and set up Power School and Power Grade.
-I'm finishing a system install on a classroom computers for Laurie Barnes.
-Not much else up there for the time being.

At VoTech I've been getting some of Ron Declement's computers in and out of trouble. He's teaching up a technological storm.

CSD has been going hot and heavy.
-Been all over the building with small problems fixing computers.
-Have shown Attilie Kilmon how to use her Test-Maker and downloaded players to run the media with her physiology text.
-Most of my time has been spent with the History Department. I've built web pages for Tom Cleary, Bill Horsey, Adam Tolley and Jim Ryan. You can see the pages below:

-The Distance Learning Room has now become so popular that we have to book it for teachers. Since I've showed them how to use it, they have built confidence enough to try it, and they love it. I had to replace the computer in the room and configure some other things, but all is running well.
-Along with webpages I am creating Power Points for the History Department to show them how it is done.
-My Media Lab idea has finally taken off and I've actually had teachers in here using the equipment. Praise, Allah!

I'm finally beginning to apply my teaching skills for instruction and the job has become much more exciting. I'm looking forward to more challenges.

Monday and Tuesday have been full days.
-Both days I worked on a web page and Power Point presentation for Tom Cleary's AP European History course. I will show him how to use the courseware in the distance learning room. He can upload the PPT to his teacher folder and the students can use it in the library or any machine that logs into the Novell network.
-I marked computers and equipment to be recycled in my old classroom.
-Helped Attilie Kilmon with her A & P courseware. She has gotten new texts with CDs and we are working to install shockwave on the library.

I've made considerable headway during January with my instructional goals. I have been able to work more closely with teachers at CSD, NDH and VoTech. I am beginning to get some points across about the use of multimedia in attacking course content objectives.
-At CSD I have worked with Special Ed to help them get a cluster of computers running the Kurzweil Reader.
-In Patsy Lamparter's computer lab I have been showing her how to integrate her video projector and use her new portable mouse. She is excited by the new reach she has with her subject matter.
-Tom Cleary is beginning to develop his use of the computer as an instructional tool.
-Attilie Kilmon is taking on a new Anatomy and Physiology course and is excited about using new software and text. I put a computer in her room to run her presentations and showed her how to use the wireless presenter. She is adapting Power Point Presentations that came with her book to use in her lecture presentations. Much of the software is interactive, so students can use it in the library or on a cluster (5 computers).
-Interacting with Frank Stout's Science and Ethics students on several afternoons when they were presenting their Utopias.
-Developing webpages for the IT department. Getting links together for teachers as resources.
- Meeting with Julie Kimball to discuss our progress at our schools.
-Setting up teachers to use the Distance Learning Room. So far Missy Kenny has used the room with her class presentations. I have several other teachers who have expressed an interest and will be using it second semester.
-I'm working to get Ashley Phillips' cluster on the Internet. Her compatriot Lauren Chaloux is starting her cluster and is excited.

At VoTech my focus has pretty much been on Ron Declement because he is teaching with the computers everyday. Between fixing, upgrading and adding he has almost amassed enough machines so that each student has their own.
-I got some simple CAD software for Roger Hearn.

At NDH my focus has been the Social Studies Department and English. Linda Blackmon and Rich Phillips see to it that most of the needs of the teachers are met, so I can be involved in enrichment.
-I've talked to Dan Sanford in Math and he is anxious to get a cluster.
-Laurie Barnes and Steve Willey have been working to integrate as much technology as possible in their lessons.

In the mean time I have finally, after three false starts, gotten to the GSA warehouse in Springfield, Virginia. We were able to get approximately 130 computers, most of them Pentium 4s. Also, 40 monitors, 2 cases of optical mice and 100 keyboards. Rich and his kids are going to work on those and we plan to replace the teacher's older machines with these HP EVOs.

Dee has asked me to take some responsibilty for the D2L project and to monitor the content specialists who have students taking online courses.

It has been a busy first semester and I hope to keep a closer watch on the Floating Opera during the second go'round.

Tuesday was our first day back from the Christmas break. Much to do.
-Started at the Board and made arrangements for Dell, Julie and me to trek to the Springfield GSA next Tuesday the 11th.
-At CSD and configured two computers.
-Examined a couple of older MACs for possible use.
-Patsy Lamparter needed some help with her Turbomouse and a USB hub.
-Connected an Internet switch hub in Busick's back room and configured two Pentium IIs to the Internet.
-Set up Distance Learning Room in the Media Center for the meeting of the Junior Denizens in the afternoon.

Wednesday has been busy.
-Showed Terry Nuwer the data disks that accompany our AP Biology text. There is much there for her to use in her course. Showed her the beginning of the Blogging process and we talked Biology content.
-Worked on two more MACs.
-Fixed Patsy's mouse and connected her.
-Installed a scanner and downloaded software and drivers.
-Worked with Ron Declement to install Word and Power Point on one of his machines.

Winter weather scared us off from making the trip to the GSA warehouse. We've rescheduled. I spent Monday between CSD and ND.
-Worked on a couple of machines.
-Connected Laurie Barnes' drop in the back of the room to the Internet. Her computer at the back of her room needs a system.
-I'm not getting to NDH as much as I would like, but CSD ad Votech takes most of my time. Rich Phillips and his crew keep ND up and running. I am getting into rooms more to integrate technology. The process is slow, but it's working in a few places.

Monday Nov. 28th though Friday Dec. 2nd

This week was busy with meetings and planning:
-Met at Board and set a date of Monday the 5th to go to the GSA.
-Seeing teachers and setting up presenters and TVs.
-Keeping records of each of the meetings and teacher's progress.
-Learning to operate equipment in the distance learning lab. Going to try to get teachers into this room for instruction. This room is a smart room that should not be wasted on only Chesapeake courses.
-Working st Votech with Ron Declement. Getting him online with a website.
-Worked in Mr. Jordan's computer lab. He has a lot of issues with old computers, but is do for an upgrade.
-The county has hired a new Tech. He is not only a good-guy, but a Mac guy. What could be better?
-Julie is ready for the walk-through at the Middle School.
-Took Steve Willey's eMAC apart in an attempt to fix it. No luck! Appears the power supply is gone. Did put a new system on Steve's computer. Put a larger monitor on his and Laurie's computer.
A good week! We're heading for the GSA on Monday!

-Were going to go to the GSA warehouse sometime soon to get as many computers as a good size truck can carry.

Friday and then Monday

Friday passed with me at CSD. This car thing is getting old.
-I worked on a computer and got it rehabbed for Terry Nuwer's classroom.
-Scavanged some parts from other computers and worked on another machine.
-Worked on web pages. Particularly one for the Social Studies Dept and the Math Department. I'm trying to give them some resources that they can use to enhance their instruction. Put the URL in Adam Tolley's hands to disperse to his department.
-Went to several classrooms to fix internet and presenters.

Monday was a paperwork day. I finally got the rosters from CSD, NDH, and Votech organized so that I can keep records of my visits and the changes that I see in instruction.
-Worked on web sites and hardware.
-Talked to Mr. Jordan and found him some resources to use in teaching Excel.
-Ron Declement came over and picked up his computer. Tony had to put drivers on it after I put on the new system . Seems it's a newer machine and XP doesn't have the drivers for some of its peripherals. Go figure!

Tuesday and Wednesday were follow-up days to Monday's presentations.

-Tuesday was spent at CSD. Went out on several hardware calls, but for the most part I worked through the presentation requests that I had. Teachers were fascinated with the United Streaming possibilities and the fact that some of their Department's supplemental software was worth investgating.
-The English Department saw their Presentation Plus software adapted to suit their instructional needs. There will be requests for assistance on using the prepared Power Point slides. I've been asked to do an Inservice for them in a few weeks.
-I burned some Resource CDs as copies for the Math and English Departments.
-Began working on several web pages to be posted from our IT Links page. One on Social Studies Online Learning Centers and another on Teachers who are School Leaders in using technology.
-My client base is growing. Lauren and Ashley (Bio Instructors) called for help improving a section on Classification.
The word is spreading and I can see an impact beginning to be made on the thinking of some people.

Wednesday started at CSD with Internet problems to correct, get a system on a wounded computer, connect a computer and Smart TV, and show how United Streaming works in a classroom.

Off to NDH to follow up on Monday. Spent most of my time with Laurie Barnes in the Social Studies Department. She is a good one and will become an integrated technology leader.

Today (Thursday) has me at CSD doing organizational work and catching up on paper stuff. So far it has been quiet and I'm getting my things done. Hopefully it will hold for the remainder of the day.

Monday PD Day

Monday rolled in with my first presentation at CSD. Using the Distance Learning room, 20 teachers were presented the United Streaming experience.
-How to sign on, stream, download, save and embed video files were on the menu.
-I used English Dept. and Math Dept. software to show how prepared Power Point presentations could be adapted and video clips embedded into the slides.
-It was explained that my approach to instruction is a one-on-one process. Each teacher was asked to e-mail me an appropriate planning period time when they would like me to help them.
-Each teacher will be instructed based on their particular content area concern. If they can tell me what their objjectives are, we will begin to examine different vehicles to address the content.
-Instruction will be delivered by having them do the process of building the presentations with my instruction. They must be the doers, not me. Repetition will be recommended. Generate another presentation on their own and I will critique it.

Tuesday through Friday

Most of the week was devoted to creating presentations for CSD and NDH. Although
-I fixed Heidi Stout's speakers and put a computer of hers online.
-Worked with Cecil Johnson getting his equipment ready for presentations.
-Loaded software on a little Presario for an Art student of Ms. Wheatley's. His want to be a graphic artist using computers and this will give him the opportunity to use powerful software.
-Moved between CSD and NDH getting software from the English department and finding out what they currently do with the resources that came with their textbooks.

The presentations will be done on Monday during PD day. CSD in the morning. I will present United Streaming and its use in the classroom. I will show how to download, embed, save and burn video files.

At NDH I will address the English Department about the Glencoe software that accompanies their textbooks. I have prepared a presentation on A Match to the Heart by Gretel Ehrlich. I will try to show them possibilties for emproving and enhancing instruction. Also we will look at their Exam View software for making tests.

It has been a busy and productive week. I'm looking forward to presenting my creations on Monday.

Monday found me at the Board. Picked up a HD from Karen and talked to Dee about protocols for the wireless cart at NDH.

CSD to touch base and off to ND. Talked to Rich Phillips about new wireless cart. Specs follow:
-25 gateway laptops, no A drives, 256 Megs RAM, 2 levels of cache for vitual memory and faster running, 6 USB ports, DVD-cd burner=$571 each
-Each computer has XP and Office 2003, will have clean slate, Nike password
-Cart-30 recharger ports=$800
-Wireless router= $40

Dan Hortert has used them with one of his classes. He had a few configuration issues, but he has three of Rich's kids in the class and they were able to fix the problem. Dan wants to use them so that each student has to do their own work and analysis of data. Because each machine will have Clean Slate, data storage may be a problem. There are several ways to deal with that. One is to disable clean slate for the length of the instructional period so that data can be saved. The other is flash drives. There are protocols to be established and Dan is starting the process.
Each department will have to determine how they intend to implement the computers into their instruction and that becomes part of my job. This is clearly a work in progress featuring coevolution.

I have enlisted Dan Hortert for our demo day acivities. Two classrooms to show differentiated instruction and his to show in classroom individual computers.

Need to talk to Mr. Bailey.

Wednesday to Friday

I went to NDH on Tuesday and accomplished a few things.
-I'll see Mr. Bailey on Monday the 31st, or Tuesday the 1st of Nov.
-Rich Phillips is getting the mobile lab together, so NDH will have a real resource for its teachers.
-Got details on accessing the county server for storing pages for websites.
-Added memory and a new monitor to Ms. Davis' computer.
-Got materials from Ms. Aldridge to start developing PD presentation on the 7th.

Wednesday started with car trouble and finished with car trouble. I'm off the road for a while. I'll be at CSD until the problem is fixed. Here's what has been going on since Wednesday.
-My focus has been on the Media Lab. I now have three computers (2 MACs & 1 PC) that I am using for production and instruction. A page on my D-140 website will be devoted to it. More later!
-Developing the presentations for PD day on Nov. 7th has my full attention at the moment. It will this week and next. I have all of the materials for the presentation and now the creativity and organization begin. This is what I signed on for and I am ecstatic about finally getting down to business.
-Wednesday also included working on a couple of computers and teaching 4th period in S & E, so I didn't get a lot accomplished on the presentations.

-Thursday the library substitute was a no-show, so I had rather an eclectic morning. I substituted for Frank Stout in S & E 4th period again. Frank had a Cross-country meet.

Today (Friday) finds me at CSD ensconced in the Media Lab about to create as much of the presentations as is possible for a Friday. I'll report the results as we kick off Monday.

Monday Into Tuesday

Monday was a professional development day. I was at CSD all day.

-The morning began with the moving of monitors from the storage area in the shop to an empty room in the library. 28 monitors are now in a new home.
-Teachers were having trouble with their Power Grade. Probably the result of turning off the server over the weekend. Grades need to be finished so this is an important function.
-Attended a presentation to the Math Department on their new software that came with the text. The presenter had problems because Patsy Lamparter's lab is locked down and he had trouble getting to the CDs. Not much time to show anything.

Tuesday

-Going back to my original plan to present United Streaming to the faculty. Use the Distance learning lab. They have tutorials on the website that do a terrific job of instruction. Get on Tom's agenda.
-Working on Five Year Plan and Standards for Administrators.
-Need to work on English department software and develop presentation.
-Will try to get to NDH to talk to Linda Blackmon about websites, Mr. Bailey about his use of the computers in his room and see English teachers.

Thursday and No Friday

Thursday was an eclectic day.
I went to CSD and worked on moving some things into the media lab. I've got things underway at CSD and I'm pleased with the progress.
We've had a change in our plans for the GSA visit, so I went to NDH to tell Rich Philips to have his troops stand down. Julie will get the 5 computers into NDMS, we will have our demonstration of differentiated instruction and then we will do the GSA visit.
-Hoped to get Linda Blackmon to show me how to get a website running on the system server, but she wasn't in school Thursday.
-Picked up the software from the English Department and will look at it for the next PD day on Monday November 7th. I'll need to talk to the English teachers to see if anyone is using the software and get on Mr. Evans' agenda.

Back to CSD and work in the media lab.

Friday was MSTA day. No school. Have a good weekend!

Tuesday and Wednesday Sped By...

Tuesday started at Votech. I replaced Ray O'Brian's A drive. Visited with Ron Declement about a computer problem. Later in the day Ron picked up his computer that we worked on to put back in his classroom. Talked briefly with Carol Segar about her Internet connection. She needs a tech to fix a wire.

At CSD, just waved and headed for NDH. At North Dorchester I talked with Rich Philips to get the logistics and protocols down for what looked like our first GSA visit. We got all of the details worked out, but our plan is on hold because of a misunderstanding.
-I was informed that the NDH SIT plan includes me. Software purchased by the English Department requires my help. I will see Ms. Aldridge (Dept. Chair) and get a copy.

Back to CSD and put a presenter into Sylvia Vannoy's room. She has a two TV setup. She can do a lot with what she has, though her teacher computer could use replacing. Wireless mouse would be a big help.

Wednesday started at the Board. We met about the possible populating of a computer lab at MLMS. Concluded that it needed new computers and we tabled the GSA visit. We did get our protocols down on how we will go about rehabbing the GSA computers, so we are getting closer to our goal there.
-The Five Year Plan and Computer Literacy Standards are in our hands. Much to do there.
It was a good meeting.

Off to CSD
-Got Barb Bailey connected to her Smart TV and instructed her on its use. She has the hardware to now do some good integrated instruction.
-Spent a couple hours with Becky Wheatley. Her Art Room has a cluster of four Pentium IIs connected to the Internet. She wants them to run some great software she has, so I made some changes. I put 17" & 19" monitors, new optical mice and new keyboards on her computers. I will show her how to burn backup CDs for her machines.
I also connected a presenter to one of her student computers and she is buying cable to let me hook her to her TV. Also gave her a GSA Graphire 2 drawing pad. I've got some teaching to do here, but she is a willing student.

Back to my media lab for reconfiguration. Down to Bill Busick's to try and help him with an ancient computer. Hopeless case. He's on my list for replacement.

Monday started at the Board. Turn in timesheets, talk to Dee and Trish. Off to MLMS to tell Julie that the computers are ready when she is.
-I started to prepare for the United Streaming presentation that I will be doing for the faculty during the November PD day. I'll use the Distance Learning Room and use the great tutorials that United Learning has online. Also I will produce a Power Point with some clips in it to show the teachers how to embed. I stopped off at Votech to tell Ron that his computer is being worked on at NDH by Rich's kids. Carol Segar has an Internet problem in her room. Her drop isn't hot. I went into the hub room to find the problem and ran into a nightmare. It appears that the drops are not numbered. The hubs have cables running out of them, but where they go is another issue. I talked to Danny Insley and he's going to try and trace the line. Once again no documentation on the Internet connections.
Over to CSD. The library is closed today. I'm going to do what I've wanted to do since I started this job. I'm going to change that rat's-nest of a work area of mine into a laboratory. I want to be able to bring teachers into the room and show them how things work. Also I need an area to work on projects involving instruction. I've been working like a gypsy. I'm going to take the time to get my area secured.
Up to NDH this afternoon. I need to pick up the two computers to complete Julie's MLMS project and talk to Mr. Bailey.
I've got two presenters, or converters, to install Monday. These are devices that convert a computer monitor signal to a TV signal. They are the minimum device necessary for teachers to use their computers for teaching.

I'm at CSD today, at least for the morning. I am trying to get 9 Optiplex Pentium IIIs operational. It is really getting down to spit and rubber bands. I'm running out of parts and it is going to be close. Four more to go.
-I've got to work on the United Learning Presentaion for PD day on the 24th.
-I'll get Ron Declement's computer back to him tomorrow.
-I gave Suzanne Zdnuowski the information on the Accounting software and I think that issue may finally be resolved.
-Patsy's computers are operational.

I have a meeting with Mr. Evans at NDH at 1:30. We have some things to discuss. If he sees the plan as viable, then we will continue with the next step in the plan.

I need to go to the Board this morning to talk to Dee. I've things swirling in my brain and I need to organize them.
-Getting the chain-of-command problems out of the way.
-How to deal with the configuring and funding of putting five computers in the classrooms of teachers who can make the best use of them?
-Getting all of the logistics worked out.
Then there's the situation with the teachers individual classrooms. Many of them are not conducive to technology instruction. Each one requires a certain redesign. That takes some money to get the tools needed to set them up for success, not frustration and failure.
-a portable mouse for presentations.
-coaxial cable and jacks to get their TV situated in the best location for instruction.
-presenters or converters to change their digital monitor signal into an analog signal for their TV. Video projectors are the answer, but not fiscally feasible.
All of these things need to be available, or my visit to the teachers becomes a practice in futility.

In the meantime I want to learn the intricacies of the distance learning lab for professional development.
-Rehab more computers,
-Interview teachers
-Carry the computers I have left to teachers who need them.
-Get my United Streaming presentaion together for PD day.

Friday started at CSD where I loaded the car and headed for NDH. Before I went I pow-wowed with Lynne Davis on some issues and talked to Patsy Lamparter. Tony came and put Novell on Patsy's two computers. I'll put them back in her lab on Monday.
Off to NDH to deliver two GSA Optiplexes, more optical mice, keyboards and ten A drives. I talked with Linda Blackmon about some issues and made some decisions about things that should be done this coming week.
-Ms. Broadie has contacted the textbook company that publishes her accounting book. She has cut a deal to get needed updated software for her course.
-I talked to Phil Albert about technology and instruction. His room needs some upgrading, but I think he'll become a real user if he has a remote mouse and a presenter.

I went back to CSD and tried to work on Jean Lewis' computers. She has some CDs her kids can use, but antiquated computers. I put a little Pentium II and large monitor in her class. I'll check with her on Monday to see if I can help her. I need to develop a plan. Her kids should be using computers for instruction.

Wednesday was a wash. I went to the Board to ask Dee about a few things that needed discussing. We talked to Gary Macabe and some interesting ideas were exchaned. Maybe a little competition for website design and other things.
Meanwhile...back at the ranch. I was heading back to CSD after the meeting, looking forward to a full plate of work, when an officer in a police car noticed that my license plates were expired. What ensued after that brief encounter destroyed the rest of my workday and is too bizarre to relate. Suffice it to say, the day was a wash.

Thursday was a busy one!
-To Votech to tell Ron Declement that I haven't forgotten him and am working on his computers.
-I went to the board to help Dee with some RAM for her computer. A 5 port hub generated the nucleus of an idea on how to get computers into teacher's rooms for a small amount for each computer, a staging area and free labor configuring the machines. We'll see.
-I put systems on Patsy Lamparter's two computers. I have them partially ready to go back in her lab. They need Novelle put on them and I can't do that, as of yet.
-There were problems poping up everywhere in the building.

*I connected an Internet drop in the Health suite to the router for that area. I helped the Health secretary get to her e-mail and the Internet. She still needs Novelle re-installed.

*Barbara Bailey's computer needed attention all morning. Scanned, defragged and burped. I told her to back up her files. I think she's going down in flames at any time.

-I spent too much time with Ron's Pentium 4. Its got a 2 Gig processor, but won't configure the monitor or load the LAN TCP/IP driver. I think the board is bad.

-I tried configuring two of the Compaq Evos that we got from GSA. They don't seem to like the memory I installed and I don't have the time to fool with them. I'm going to NDH tomorrow and I'll take the Evos, Ron's Pent 4 and let Rich Phillips kids have a go.

-I taught all of 4th period with Frank in Science and Ethics.

Day is done, and so am I!

Monday passed with two computers rehabbed and my trip to NDH being very productive.
-I took another case of GSA optical mice, and a few more keyboards, to Linda for her faculty. Rich Philips distributed most of the first batch.
-I met with Vicki and showed her how to cut and paste from the HSA Biology online document onto a word document. She can now make all of the examinations that she needs from the previous HSA exams.
-Ms. Broadie is onto some accounting software. I picked up the Automatic Accounting software and brought it back to CSD and gave it to Suzanne Zdunowski.
-I loaded Power Grade onto Ms Decriscio's computer and hooked up an optical mouse for her.
-I connected a presenter to Ms. Davis' Smart TV and she is doing those Power Point presentations.
-I talked to Mr. Bailey about getting 4 or 5 computers in his room for differentiated instruction. He is instructionally sophisticated in technology use and just needs the hardware. The computer I initially brought him to start his his classroom cluster turns out to be better than his instructional computer and we need to switch machines. This lead to my discussing with Rich Philips how to load Novell Client and Groupwise onto machines. He is going to help me with this. It is frustrating to go into classrooms to help improve instruction with the use of applications and find that the hardware limitations are keeping teachers from moving forward. Our job as Integrated Tech Resource folks must include our ability to put machines online and service them. Until there is a tech per school there is no other choice. NDH has the advantage of having Rich Philips and the kids he has trained. They can quickly fix just about everything.
I will take another computer to Mr. Bailey and hopefully a hub to get him started on building his cluster.
-While I'm on Rich Philips let me just comment here what an asset (under used) he is to the system. He has to be utilized to a much greater extent in the system. I am getting the word out.
That was my Monday.

Tuesday started at CSD rehabbing. I've got 7 of the 11 GSA computers operational. They're good machines. I will start moving them out to classrooms as soon as possible. I must reconnoiter first. I don't want the hardware to languish. It where go to teachers who will use it not park it in the classroom cause they want one.
-I have a plan for my classroom invasions and I will share it with Dee. I have found a small hub for $30 that is perfect for creating clusters from one T1 drop. Do we have budget money to cover them and cords to connect computers to the hub.
-I removed to of Patsy Lamparter's computers from her lab and I am putting systems on them. They were is serious trouble.
-I've got Ron Declement's machine almost ready. It doesn't show a TCP/IP icon for an Internet connection. I will reload XP.
-I taught in Frank's room last period and will return on Thursday afternoon.
-I fixed Paul Allen's computer. One of his kids had switched his internet connection to an inactive plug.
-Helped put Lauren's presenter and TV together. She's a doer. She's gonna make it and be an excellent teacher. I hope we can keep her.

Blue Monday! How I hate Blue Monday!

Friday was a good day I worked at CSD in the morning and got things together to visit Julie at MLMS.
-Julie put a new system on one of her teacher's computers and upgraded the RAM. She is a great student and now has added another dimension to her instruction.
-Spent most of the day at MLMS and we accomplished quite a bit.
-Back at CSD and finished up some upgrades on computers.

Monday has found us in an hour fog delay and me at the keyboard at CSD. I'm going to NDH today to work with Vicki Pickett and interview the teachers about technology and their needs.
-I'm carrying more mice and keyboards for Linda to distribute to teachers. Actually, I think I'll carry a mouse to each of my interviewees as a peace offering.

Thursday the 29th

Yesterday was fruitful
-I went to MLMS in the morning and Julie gave me the grand tour of the building, as it was only my second time there. We were going to help one of her teachers with a computer issue, but we didn't get around to it due to problems with the ML server. Went back to the Votech.
-Put a GSA computer in Charlene's office so that she can run her pricing and account software for operating her kitchen.
-Took several computers out of Ron Declement's room that are on the fritz.
-Worked on a computer in the media center that needed a new HD and be rebuilt from the ground up. Finished it at 5 PM and they have one of their machines back online.

Today I started at Votech for a few loose ends. Over to CSD to stage for my trip to NDH. Too much to do here and I'm going to stay.
-Computers to get up and running
-A project to put GSA computers in the distance learning lab. The lab is under-utilized, but a great place to use for student research and teaching.
-Get a GSA machine for Becky Wheatley in Art.
-There are machine problems all over the building. I'll try to help, as there are no techs available for a while.
-Lynne Davis wants me to do a Training on United Streaming on the next PD day. I'm all over that!

Started at CSD to give Frank a CD on the Scientific Revolution. Stayed to help him fix a sound problem.
Yesterday's work at ND went well. Most of it was spent on the phone or on paper.
-We have United Streaming available for the system. That's a biggee!
-I need to try and fix the problem with the PDF files of HSA Biology. Probably the best approach will be Acrobat 5.
-Made calls about laptops for Rich Phillips. Dell, CDWG and Circuit City. Circuit City sounds the best.
-Set up a computer to use in the library.
-Organized optical mice.
-Talked to Ms. Broadie about Accounting software. She took it home to evaluate.

Today will begin at MLMS. Julie has a teacher in need with a computer problem.
-Take Charlene at Votech a computer for her classroom.
-Get Terry Nuwer to move computers for recycling out of shop area.
-I've got to find another storage area for the monitors and stuff. The wrestling team is taking over the shop area and I've been evicted. The search is on.
-Keep putting systems on GSA computers.
-Visit teachers with inventory sheets.

Yesterday I finally got my work area at CSD organized. I moved a lot of equipment to the storage area in the shop. We will be recycling the computers and monitors that are no longer viable. The new equipment from GSA has found a home and will be distributed to teachers as need arises.

Today, I will start at CSD to pick up some things and then off to NDH. I will begin today doing the inventory on each teacher's planning period and assess their current technology and needs. I will discuss how they teach and what enhancements can be added using technology. I will start a database of information for future reference.
I need to get a price for Rich Phillips on those laptops. Capt. JaxMathFax will be introduced to Bruce and his kids.
I'm heading North!

Monday and Parent Conferences

Today should be a chance, finally, to get my workroom organized. I need to get computers and monitors out of the room and into the storage. I will work today to get the equipment moved and organized. Hopefully, I can get this done in the morning. In the afternoon I would like to visit the teachers and start filling out questionnaires and finding out what they would like me to do. If they have software that came with their text, find out if they need assistance getting it into operation.
- I will put systems on the remaining computers and get them to various teachers. I will take one to Charlene at Votech. The others will be used as I find out what teachers need during my interviews.
- Give a CD to Frank on the Scientific Revolution. He should use it with his students.
- Call Gook for code word on server so that I can get at the array.

I'll go to NDH tomorrow and get on schedule as I planned.

I'm bound and determined to get to NDH today. I promise. I will start a CSD, but I must leave for a meeting at the Board.
- The server had an issue this morning and calls started hitting the media center.
- I was trying to get stuff together to take to NDH when Cecil Johnson put up an SOS. I went to investigate and ended up giving of the ball to Brooke.
- Off to the Board and a productive meeting with Dee and Julie. We were to meet with Karen Adams, but she didn't show. More problems on her end. We discussed what we are doing in the schools and started going over the county Tech document. Dell came in and told me he had the monitors in the back of the van and he wanted to unload at CSD. I left the meeting and we returned to Cambridge-South, grabbed some students and unloaded 45 monitors and keyboards.
- It's about 11:30 now and I need to get to NDH. I loaded up 10 keyboards, a case of optical mice, 3 computers and the elusive accounting software. Off to ND...
- I delivered the stuff and visited Ms. Broadie with the sofware. She still doesn't think the software is worth her time. I think I agree. They should probably be using Quicken...but what do I know?
- I was about to work on one of Ms. Broadie's computers when Rich Phillips asked me if I would cover part of his last period class, because of an emergency. I said sure and covered until 1:45. I had to get back to Cambridge to deal with a family issue. I left and really didn't get much accomplished. I'll get back next week.

Today I am torn as to where to be. I have much to do at both schools.

Tuesday was a busy day.
I started with Ron Declement at VoTech. He wants to lock down his computers when his is absent. He figured out how to put password protection on the startup. Good job, Ron!
I went to NDH with a computer for Mr. Hughes. Was asked to get a price on laptops from Rich Phillips and then had a matter arise and had to leave for Cambridge. I didn't get anything accomplished at NDH and need to go back today, or tomorrow.
Back to Cambridge-South to chase down the ellusive Accounting software. I found it thanks to Patsy Lamparter. I will take it to NDH for evaluation and the next step in whatever.
I finally have Jim Ryan connected. We practically had to perform and exorcism in his room to get things to work, I had to replace his TV, a brand new AverKey right out of the box didn't work, we played "plug tag" with Radio Shack and I put four different printers in his room before one worked. The one that worked came from Colvin Campers office. I had to replace Camp's and give his to Jim. Whew!
I traveled to the Board to answer questions about the trip to the GSA Warehouse in Springfield, VA. There is much concern about cost supporting whatever we bring back from there. I only want to bring back what we can use and is functional.
I picked up the password for CaptJaxMathFacts from Julie and told Rita about it. I will show the software to Bruce at ND when I go. I'll also tell Debbie Johnson.
I need t get Laura Layton straight with her cable problem. I should start with her on today.

Wednesday Dell and I traveled to the GSA Warehouse in Springfield on a hunting expedition. We were looking for technology for free. Our hunt netted us some nice treasures.
- 26 Pentium 4s, unfortunately with no memory or HD. Karen feels the price for the HD and memory is cheap enough to warrent using the Compaq EVOs. $600 a piece ($15,600)
- 4 cases (120) of optical mice, brand new valued at $26 a piece. ($3,120)
- 13 Dell Optiplex towers with HD and memory. I've started to put XP on them and will use as student computers in teacher's rooms. $500 a piece. ($6,500)
- 46 monitors. Most are 17" screens some larger. Probably $350 a piece (12,250)
- Two cardboard boxes of computer speaker sets. Must be 23 sets. Some need adapters. Probably average $15 a piece. ($345)
- 60 Compaq keyboards still in the box. Brand new. About $17 a piece. ($1,020)
- 8 Graphfire 2 electronic sketch pads and wireless mice. Brand new. $100 a piece. ($800)

-TOTAL: $39,635

We were quite pleased with our first visit and plan to try and make the trip once a month. All of the equipment is free, greatly needed and all for the price of gas to Springfield along with a little sweat.

Thursday and my intentions were to go to NDH. As Dante' said, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." I didn't make it.
- I fixed Laura Layton's TV/Computer problem.
- I started moving the GSA equipment from the storage room to my workroom. I wanted to start putting systems on the Optiplexes.
- Lynne Davis sent an e-mail to the faculty to pick up a new optical mouse at the media center. Some came and were pleased. More will come this week.
- The Optiplexes are taking the XP systems and all look to be in excellent condition. I've done 4.
- I taught in Frank's room during the last period.
- Most of the day was a clean up and fix.
I'm going to start moving computers that can be rehabbed to an area in our storage room so that Terry Nuwer's crew can get them out of the building for recycling. I'll do most of this on Monday during the parent conferences.

Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines! Here we go for another week that looks busy.
Friday saw me all over the place.
I started at CSD with a Jim Ryan problem. We've had more trouble getting Jim connected to his TV from his computer. Compatibility is always and issue. Got the cable, but forgot the RCA converter. The TV has no remote can't get to alternate setting for computer. I will go to Radio Shack today and get a universal. I also attempted to hook up a printer, but not with much luck. Try again today.
Laura Layton had a cable on the fritz and I had to disconnect her computer from her TV. I've got to work something out here.
Rehabbed computers.
Ron Declement wants to lock down his computers. Not an easy task without adding software. I don't think he'll want to do that.
Had a meeting at the board on Captain JaxMathFax. Interesting. Need to tell Rita and demonstrate.
Talked to Karen Adams about GSA computers.

Monday
I'm to do a presentation on Sherlock Holmes for Judy Howell's 2nd and 4th period English classes. I've put a lot of time in on the presentation and props. Looking forward to doing it.
Adam Brooks needs a form filled out for the Siemens competition. I'll try to get at that.
I need to call Dee about TAG meeting and travel arrangements for Wednesday to Springfield.

Wednesday was a busy day.
Rehabbing continues on the computers. I called the GSA in Springfield and have a tentative date of next Wednesday the 21st for a visit. I told Tamela I was looking for 40 computers: Pentium IIIs minimum with hard drives, monitors, keyboards and mice. One never knows what they'll find at the warehouse, so there may be more equipment that can help the cause in Dorchester.
Loaded math software for Jackie Wood on some student computers in her room.
I followed Brooke on several calls from a printer to an error message. I am learning from him some of the technical details for fixing problems. Every little bit I can learn makes me that much more effective in helping teachers use technology. It's for sure they can't use it if it doesn't work.
Got computer up and running for Mary Etta and determined her printer is out of ink.

Thursday took Julie and me to a Project Open Meeting in PG County. Interesting to listen to what counties are doing with Online Instruction. The project is very concerned with assessing the quality of instructors and courses. The number of people taking these courses is surprising low considering the effort and problems inherent in using an LMS. It is amazing to look at the usage and development differences in the counties, as usual. Some are doing their own production and delivery and others are not in the game. The number of individuals involved in the online process is quite small. There are more problems in maintaining and revising these course, then there is in writing them. At this stage of the process it seems futile for some of the systems, including us, to attempt to develop their own courses. The audience and funds for development are limited.

I will call Dee about the GSA trip. There is concern about the equipment that will be returned to the county.

A fog delay starts today. Yesterday was a good day.
Started at CSD. Put a printer in Jim Ryan's room.
Started for NDH
Went to Ms. Broadie's room to evaluate her Automated Accounting software. There is a problem here. Called John Hurley. He said it should run. She will bring the original software in tomorrow.
Met with Julie, Ms. D and Linda on administering Larson Math software. Good meeting. Julie knows her poop. Will show to Debbie Johnson at CSD.
Met with Lou Jones and explained my time and function at ND. She will e-mail faculty with said.
Finally, got that rehabbed computer to Mr. Bailey. I didn't like its operation after I delivered it, so I put a new system and Microsoft Office 2003 on it.

Today at CSD and VoTech.
Ms. Kilmon and Ms. Creighton have computers with issues. Will visit.
Need to change Camper's printer with Mr. Ryan's.

Monday was productive.
Got computers rehabbed and out to Rita Webb in Special Ed. for her Reader and Terry Nuwer for her classroom.
I'm down to only a few computers worth fooling with. I've found about a dozen with bad boards. They will be recycled.

Spent 4th period with Lauren and Ashley helping them improve their classroom instruction. The are concerned with the low grades their students are getting on quizzes. We talked about using objectives as the instructional focus. I showed them my website and how the material is organized. They need to be consistent setting a routine for their students to follow. They're going to be OK as soon as they get over the culture-shock.
Judy Howell wants me to do a presentation on Sherlock Holmes for 2nd and 4th period English classes. I am producing a Power Point and will do the presentations on the coming Monday.
Frank wants me to teach on Wednesday in S & E.

Today I'll start at CSD and go to NDH.
I will be loading Accounting software on Ms. Broadie's computers.
Julie, Linda and I are meeting with Ms. Decriscio today around 11 AM to walk through the use of the Larson Math Software.

I will work at CSD today. The plan now is to do CSD on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. NDH on Tuesday and Thursday. Things are beginning to settle in and I can see how my schedule should be.

I've just gotten quite a bit of software that the science department received. They are upgrading some courses and have received examination copies of texts and support materials. I need to preview the software to demonstrate how it can enhance instruction.

Thursday started with a fog delay. I took advantage of the late opening and went to ISG to pick up the monitors and other stuff.
I started at Votech delivering Inspiration software to Charlene in Food Service. Ron Declement had a computer that needed Novell removed so that he could use it on the Internet. Took care of that and set up two other computers for him. He now has 11 computers and is using the Internet with his students each day.
Back to CSD to work on two computers for Jackie Wood. They were put in her math classroom for student use.
Taught in the afternoon with Frank in S & E.

Yesterday was a busy day. I started at VoTech with Ron Declement. Ron needs two cables , memory and a keyboard. I'll take that to him today.

I was searching for CAD (computer aided design) software for the CSD tech teacher. I was surprised to find that Votech has no drafting course and that the school doesn't own any CAD software. This should be corrected. To have students learning a trade without the technology inherent in the trade is a travesty. We also should have an electronics course, also.
Over to CSD to start working on computers. I finished rehabbing machines for Derrick Coleman and Jackie Wood. Need four more for Rita Webb and one for Terry Nuwer.
I moved some of the equipment from my classroom to the media center and worked on Frank's machines while I was there. Putting virus software on his machines.
Trying to get Jim Ryan configured so that he can use United Streaming in his room.
I called the Government Services Administration (GSA) warehouse in Springfield, VA and talked to Tamela. I told her what we needed, as far as hardware, and she said they are currently waiting on FEMA for orders and that I should call back next week. She did say that she felt they could meet our requests. Things are looking up. We need hardware and if this works maybe we can have a pipeline to meet our immediate needs.
We need some TVs or video projectors. We have so much that can be done now to enhance instruction and little to do it with.
I need memory and hard drives for our machines.
Phil Brohawn has more monitors, keyboards and mice for us from ISG.
I must remember to ask Dee if we can give some sort of certificate to businesses that help us out with equipment.

Today I'll start at VoTech, go to CSD and work my way up to ND. I am taking a 17" monitor with me for a teacher. I need to talk to Trish Vickers about the A & P course at ND.
I've made a CD for Vickie Pickett with the HSA tests converted from PDF files to Word.
I have two machines to work on. One I'd like to use one for James Bailey as a teaching machine.
I need to read the Tech Implementation report.
I've got to do a little study between all of this repair. I also want to write a little philosophy of tech use. Busy! Busy! Busy!

Monday on a Tuesday

I'm probably going to spend the day at CSD and do ND tomorrow.
I will check at Vo-Tech this morning to see if there is a piece of CAD sofware that is licensed to the school. Mr. Johnson who teaches the Tech Class is looking for a CAD application to show his students how design software works. I will call Karen today and see if I can get the administrative password to the setup on a computer in the Vo-Tech media. It needs repairing and I can't get in.
At CSD today I've much to do. Hopefully the Internet is up. Being down caused a lot of instructional problems, system-wide, last week.
I want to move equipment from the Science Dept. to my work area. I need to mark some computers for recycling and finish installing software on Frank's machine.
More computers to rehab. My list of teachers wanting extra computers in their rooms is growing. I'm going to call the GSA warehouse today and see if wee can get at least 40 computers and peripherals.
I need to read the Tech & Learning Implementation Plan and comment.

I have thoughts on structuring the use of technology in the classroom and I will begin writing a philosophy to parallel the Implementation Plan. More to follow.

Thursday was interesting. I spent the day at CSD. I taught a full period with Frank Stout in the afternoon. Supplied speakers and a DVD/VCR combination for Jim Ryan. Loaded XP on one of Frank Stout's machines. I've more to do on that machine come next week. Spent most of the day fighting the Internet and working on those computers that I'm rehabbing. I moved some equipment from my old classroom down to the Media Center. I've got to get some of the stuff out of the Science Dept. for recycling. I finished the day getting an IP address in the chorus computer. I've got one more computer for Derrick and one for Rita. Whoopee!

Friday started at VoTech. I suggested to John Hurley that he move the teacher's computer from the VoTech Media Center into the office of his new Guidance Counselor. I made that move with his blessing.
Down to the Board and picked up science materials to be taken to CSD and NDH. Went to CSD collected thoughts and opinions and then set off for NDH.
At NDH I visited Vicki Pickett and we talked about Anatomy and Physiology and that I had found a piece of software that converted PDF files into RTF Word files. I have converted the 2001, 2002 and 2003 HSA Biology Exams into RTF Word files. I tried to load the files onto her computer, but she has a Windows 98 machine and it wouldn't recognize the flash drive. I burned a CD with the files.
Attempted to fix Ms. Broadie's computers. One is running and the other needs a system, or hard drive. I may use one of the machines for Mr. Bailey.
There are some printers at ND that have stopped working and I may take a crack at them
I feel like I'm not getting to the teachers as yet to help them implement the curriculum with technology. I am busy trying to get the technology (hardware) to them. The fact is that until there is the proper equipment in place the integration of technology os a moot issue.

Yesterday started by moving the computer monitors into the school. There is a server that ISG gave us that looks real interesting. I'll get into it today.
The Internet was on the blink most of the day, so work there was spotty. Monitoring e-mai,l and the blog, is a challenge on days like this one.
I Started at CSD with rehabbing. I managed to get one Pentium 2 ready for Derrick. I am hurting in the hard drive category! Finding drives and installing new systems is really slowing the process down. Also, memory is becoming an issue. No, not mine! The computer's! I can't find enough memory.
Unpacked and configured a new Dell for the Chorus teacher. I need to get it in her room today. I've go to learn to install Group Wise, Novell and Power School/Grade.
I need to get Barb Bailey straight with her scanner.
Went to NDH after lunch to meet Dee and register a student for an online course. That went well and I will revisit Leslie Benjamin to help her get her computer straight.
I may have missed Julie's presentation, but I'm not sure. Returned to CSD and hooked up a printer for Pete Pietras.

Today I'll start at CSD. I should finish at NDH, but I'll see how the day goes. Frank wants me to help with his 4th period Science and Ethics. Greeks and Aristotle.
These gas prices are killing me! I will try to stabilize my schedule starting next week. My plan is CSD and VoTech Monday, Wednesday and Friday; NDH Tuesday and Thursday.

Lots done yesterday.
-Started at CSD with the intention of heading to ND in the afternoon. Didn't happen! Stayed at CSD and e-mailed to ND.
-Started day rehabbing computers and worked on them all day: on and off.
-Had problems all day with Pete Pietras' computer. With the help of Brooke, finally got his Power School and e-mail up and running.
-Went to Board to check on questions with Online course and Distance Learning.
-Added memory to Barb Bailey's computer. Runs better.
-Went to ISG. Phil Feldman donated 6 Dell 17' monitors and a server to the DC school system. They're a big help. I'll scavenge anything we can get.

Today in the big city...
-Back to CSD. Get the monitors and computer in school and check them out.
-Working to get computers rehabbed.
-Visit teachers.
-Another Smart TV problem.
-Might make it to ND to deal with Distance Learning and Online course.
-Convert PDF HSA test files to Word files for Vickie Pickett.
-Contact Vickie about Anatomy and Physiology course. Check rosters.
-Visit Board to turn in forms.
-Julie presents SIRS to Maces Lane faculty today. I'll be there at 3:15.

Yesterday was busy.
-I met with Frank Stout during first period to discuss the Greeks and their importance in the formation of western society.
-I had rehabbed two computers for Ron Declement at Vo-Tech and ran them over to him.
-Up to ND to answer an SOS on a Smart TV and some computers that are acting up.
-Fixed a printer that wanted to print 5 copies each time it was accessed.
-Vickie Pickett wants the HSA Biology exams for 2001 and 2 to be changed into Word files. I'll do that today and deliver them to her tomorrow.
-Talked to Leslie Benjamin about registering a student for an AP Geometry course online. Need to talk to Dee.
-Dave Bromwell wanted to know about Distance Learning facilities to take advantage of instructors at CSD and its environs.
-Started to rehab several computers at ND.
-Went to ND Middle School to meet with Julie about an application problem. Stayed to help connect a video projector to a teacher's laptop. Julie and I struggled with the problem that was eventually rectified by the teacher. Good for her!
-Picked up Power Sticks and extension cords at Wal-Mart on my way back to CSD.

Today I will be at CSD and the Board.
-I need to talk to Dee about online course and distance learning.
-I need to get the administrative password for the lab computers at ND.
-Try to find a new version of Adobe Acrobat.
-I'll be back at CSD to try and rehab more computers and deal with another "Smart "TV

Fire Up!

-Friday was very productive. I've gotten two computers up and running for Derrick Coleman's math class. Two more to go. I'm still working to get Rita's five computers functional. Jackie Wood needs one computer. I think I can accommodate her.

-I finally got over to Vo-Tech. I had a nice conversation with John Hurley, and explained my mission and we talked about his instructor's needs.
From John's office to Ron Declement's classroom. Ron is working very hard to turn his classroom into a tech room. He had seven computers that he uses for student instruction. He uses the Internet extensively and is very open to new ways of improving student performance. Ron's kids are getting excellent instruction and tech training all in one program.
-We found three computers that were ear-marked for the trash heap in the Vo-tech boiler room thanks to Ronnie Crismond. It turns out that two of them started up and ran like tops. I'm working on the third, so that Ron will now get three more computers and his classroom will have one computer for every two students. Ron is a tech leader in our system.
-I talked to Carol Seger and Ray Obrian while at the Vo-Tech and I've got things to do with them.
-Back to CSD to work on those computers I am rehabbing. A couple of odd jobs popped up. I handled those.

Monday will start at CSD. I need to talk to Frank Stout and get one computer configured. I will visit the Vo-Tech faculty again to determine their needs. I need to pick some things up from Wal-Mart (Power Sticks and such...). I'll do that on my way to NDH.
-I need to talk with Leslie Benjamin. She has a student interested in an Online course. CSD has no one signed up for Online courses according to Sheila.
-I have two computers to rehab for Ms. Broadie at ND.
-I'll start loading Office 2003 on the Media Lab Computers
-I'll visit teachers on planning.

Yesterday slowed down a bit. I stayed at CSD all day to start loading XP on computers. I need 5 for the math department and 5 for Special Ed.. I've managed to get two ready. I'm having some trouble finding hard drives that are good. Getting there slowly, but surely.
-I connected Paul Allen's computer to his Smart TV with an Aver Key and about 65 feet of coaxial cable. He wanted his computer on the far side of the room to be his instructional computer. He's hooked up.
-Had a chance to begin organizing my work room at CSD. As I fix computers and get them out into the classrooms I'll get more room.
-I set up a computer to use for myself.
-Ms. Lamparter had a problem that I got around, but didn't fix. A student had managed to get his Word document attached to the NEW document icon. Each time you clicked the icon for a new document, or used NEW from the menu his text file appeared. Interesting.
-Printer problems for Mr. Sydnor. Fixed.
-Ms. Danner monitor and printer problems. Fixed.
-Taught with Frank Stout in Science and Ethics. He's going to be fine.

Today I am going to CSD first to set up two more computers for new systems, then off to Vo-Tech. I want to talk to John Hurley and visit with Ron Declement.
-I will begin visiting teachers on their planning periods to discuss their needs for equipment and help using the technology for instruction.
-I will call the GSA warehouse in Springfield, Virginia to see if equipment is available and when would be a good time for a visit-May go to ND. Will see how the day goes.

Yesterday was a rush:
-Started at CSD. Deb Johnson's presenter needed a cable and I had to reinstall her Power Point application. Debbie had an extra Smart TV remote. Now I can fix Paul Allen's problem.
-Derrick Coleman needs a couple of computers in his room to run the Algebra software that came with the new text. I need to check with Tricia about the license.
-A little after 9AM, off to NDH.
-A problem with a Smart TV. The volume control appears to be stuck at 36. Way to loud. A search of the menu functions reveals a MIN/MAX volume setting. Someone had set the MIN at 36. Fixed problem and discovered an extra Smart TV remote. Better than gold!
-Found the problem with B building's cable. A switch down by the Auditorium was discovered by Linda Blackmon that needed switching. Voila!
-Started with Ms. Broadie's problem. I set up her video projector work station. Determined the problem with a laser printer that didn't want to function. However I had to take the printer apart to fix a belt that pulls the paper through the print process. Fixed it and reconnected. One of her computers had a student password installed and she couldn't get past it. I tried to remove the password by removing the block on the board. No luck! Fortunately, another student knew the word and we got in. She needed three more computers, as guidance was overloading her, so I hooked her up. Found two Dells that have problems. I will work on then tomorrow.
-Installed Larson software for Ms. Decriscio.
-Didn't get to install Microsoft Office 2003 on Linda's lab computers. Will try Friday.

Today at CSD
-I'm starting and staying here today to catch up.
-I'm hoping to get the computers rehabbed for Rita. I have to find out about the Kurzweil installation and license.
-Want to get Mr.Coleman a computer for his Algebra software and find out about the license.
-I need to get to Vo-Tech. Ron Declement wants some help.
-Teach with Frank in S & E 4th period.

It's Hump Day!

I finished up at NDH yesterday afternoon. Delivered power sticks, audio/video cable and USB mouse to Linda.
-Worked on Ms. Aldrldige's Smart TV and determined that the cable is out in B building. I also removed the cover on her composite TI/cable box and pulled her cable line down so that it would connect to the TV mounted in her classroom. She says it has never worked. I'll look into this. I think it will.
-Blogged to log morning activities.
-Helped Linda check all of her lab computers in the library. We've got a printer problem. More tomorrow.
-Linda would like Microsoft Office 2003 loaded on her library computers. I have to check with Brooke on that one. It seems to me he mentioned some conflict with 2003 and Groupwise.
-Had teacher ask a question about Larson software. E-mailed Julie on that one.
-Began connecting Ms. Broadie's teaching station. Will finish today 2nd period. Her planning.

Today I will stop at CSD.
-Got an e-mail SOS last night from Debbie Johnson that her presenter quit.
-Need to talk to Rita about Kurzweil Reader now that her computers are being configured.
-Try to see Sheila about Online Course.
-Tell Frank I'll return to assist in 4th period Science and Ethics

CSD This Morning

-Began this morning with an interface problem:TV/computer.
-Computer in Special Ed. on the fritz. Needed new mouse and printer connected.
-Loaded XP on first rehabbed computer for Rita. Four more to go.
-The Wellness Center needed to replace a monitor that was on the fritz. Hooked them up.
-Math teacher having problem installing new software that goes with the algebra series. I installed it and got him to the correct application
-Attempting to straighten up my room in the media center between tasks.
-Wireless problems developed between a computer transmitter and TV receiver. Teacher discovered that turning the transmitter ON helps the receiver.

-Monday began at CSD. Five computers are needed in Special Ed. I've gotten one up and running and am planning to do the other four.
-Teacher grade books needed configuring and I went out to help Brooke. Didn'tpick up the protocol very well and decided to leave process to him.
-Set up a Smart TV for Paul Allen. He is missing a Smart TV remote which makes his Smart TV almost impossible to use. We could also factor in no desks in the room.
-I needed to make delivery of mouse to NDH, expecting to return to CSD to work on those computers. However there were other needs to be met and I stayed the entire day. I have to set up a teaching station for Ms. Broadie. Video projector and computer. Needed things we didn't have.
-Talked to Rich Phillips about surveys he did at NDH on learning styles of students and teachers. He gave me copies of tech use by students and teachers. All will be usable in the near future for data acquisition.
-Grade books at NDH weren't configured and the teachers were in real need. Called Leanne and wrote down protocol for getting grade books operational. Linda and I spent the remainder of the afternoon in classrooms configuring. More left to do.
-Stopped at Walmart on way home to pick up Power Sticks and audio/video cables. Need to order VGR splitter cables for Smart TVs.

-Today I'll check at the Board about meeting on the 23rd (today, or Sept). To CSD to check in and then to NDH to carry sticks and cables. Set up Ms. Broadie and maybe help finishing grade books.
-Need to get back to CSD to work on computers and check with Frank Stout about the upcoming Science and Ethics class and his use of equipment.

The Ninth Grade Comes Today

Dee's leadership, meeting Julie and experiencing her competencies; Friday's meeting has has given me the perspective for goal setting. There is much to be done.
I returned to CSD after the meeting on Friday and finished my work for the most part in Franks Stout's room. One student computer needs to have XP installed and his teaching computer connected to the classroom printer.
I spent the rest of the afternoon eclectically getting teachers connected to the Internet, moving computers to make my workroom functional, tracing hublines that should be operational in classrooms.
Today the 9th graders make an appearance for their orientation. I will start at CSD, go to NDH and then return to CSD. I will talk to Lynne Davis and Leslie Benjamin about enrollment for online courses.I 'm hoping to meet with a few teachers at both schools to begin my inventory of needs, in methodology and hardware.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!
I'm still finishing up some of Frank Stout's machines. (loading XP, Office, etc.). I will address the faculty at CSD at 11:30 and the NDH faculty at 12:30. I plan to stay at NDH for the remainder of the day, as I want to talk to Linda Blackmon. This will be my first contact with her and there is much to be discussed.
I will get Teacher Rosters today, organize planning periods, and begin an inventory assessment of each teacher's hardware and try to develop a "needs" list for future reference.
I will follow up on the e-mail concerning departments with new software. It's standard equipment with new texts.
NDH has a problem with the texts needed for a second semester Human Anatomy and Physiology course. Dave Bromwell sent out an SOS and since I will be there today I'll touch base with him. Maybe it's time to find an online A & P and let some of the students get their credits that way.
I set up a computer from my old lab in Asley Phillips' room yesterday and got her on the internet. There are quite a few rookies at CSD (don't know about NDH, yet) and they are going to need a lot of guidance. We've got our work cut out for us.
I must be in Annapolis this evening by 6:30 so I will be leaving at about 4-4:40 PM.
I'll check the Opera as often as I can today for any comments or directives.

Adam Brooks wants me to mentor his Honors project in robotics. He has an Independent Study second period and I told him he can use my room in the library to work on his bot. He may also be able to help me rehab some of the computers. Do you see any problem with this?

-I will be at a funeral this morning until approximately one o'clock. I should then be at CSD working in my former classroom.
-I've got an office at CSD (thanks to Lynne) filled with computers just begging to be rehabbed. I'm going to fix them and get them out to teachers in need.
-I'm scheduled to address the teachers tomorrow at CSD and NDH. I'm going to show my face, tell the folks where I'll be located and my responsibilities. I'll follow up with a mailbox flyer with web addresses and other pertinents. I'll send you a copy.
-I will talk to Linda Blackmon tomorrow in hopes of establishing an outpost in the environs of the upper county.
-Frank Stout wants me to help him ease into the Science and Ethics course (I'm still in the process of putting systems on his machines). He would like me to teach the history of Western Philosophy. I plan to assist him in any way I can until he is comfortable with his new situation.
-I am beginning to fill my plate. My daily schedule will appear here on The Floating Opera. Open it, minimize it, refresh it each time you bring it back up (I may have posted something new). Comment when you need to. I will check it roughly every hour-on-the-hour...and "Oh,yes!", check the CALENDAR LINK on the right side of the page for the Reader's Digest version of the day. -The hope is to set up a post at CSD and NDH. If Lynne and Linda can find the space, I will have a corner in which to work.
-I would like to address both faculties on either Thursday or Friday of this week to let them know of my presence and encourage them to take advantage of IT instructional options.
